With the Mayor of Haslemere, David Round, at the Summer Exhibition

Summer Exhibition: Friday 8 June (Preview Opening Night) to Friday 22 June 2018 at Haslemere Museum

Venue: The Haslemere Museum, 78 High Street, Haslemere, Surrey, GU27 2LA

Private view: Friday 8 June 6pm-10pm

A summer exhibition in Haslemere will celebrate the superb hand-thrown porcelain ceramics of Gemma Wightman and the stunningly eye-catching impressionist oil paintings of Philippa Richardson – both Surrey artists.

The exhibition will be a vibrant display of the artists’ new and more established pieces and paintings. It includes the full range of Gemma’s porcelain tableware – from the delicately thrown egg cups, and mugs to dinner service pieces, jugs and platters – and Philippa’s captivating oil-on-canvas landscapes and still lifes.

The artists have come together to create an exhibition of ceramics and paintings that encapsulates their common interests. As passionate artist-makers, both are driven by a love of their medium, which is enhanced by their roles as mothers.

Gemma, who has a BA Honours Degree from Bath Spa College of Art and Design, has been designing and making her brand of hand-thrown porcelain tableware for almost a decade. She supplies large national retailers such as Notonthehighstreet as well as independent shops and galleries.

Gemma Wightman
Gemma works from a studio within the garden of her Surrey home in the picturesque village of Send Marsh, where she lives with her two young daughters, Matilda and Lola, and their golden retriever, Maggie. Her designs originate from her desire to fill her beautiful home with beautiful things. Every piece – designed and made to be used and to enrich everyday life – is branded on the base with her ‘Approved by Matilda and Lola’ stamp.

Philippa Richardson
Philippa developed a love for painting early on in her life. She received a BA Honours Degree in 1996 from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. After graduating, Philippa set up a studio, exhibiting throughout the south of England in galleries including No.54 Shepherds Market, The Arts Club London, Ardquin Fine Arts in Haslemere and the Wey Gallery in Godalming.

Philippa works from a studio in her home in Haslemere, where she lives with her husband and three children. Her paintings are a reflection of her life experiences, injected with passion and emotion resonant in the loose brush work and gestural markings. She is particularly drawn to the rugged and naturally beautiful land and seascapes of Cornwall.

Both artists are keen to share their skills and so will be running demonstrations in ‘Wheel throwing’ and ‘Oil painting on canvas’ in allocated timeslots throughout the show (see the museum website for information).
